This was the first film directed by Akira Kurosawa after World War II, based on the contentious Kyushu University Professor Ryuuren event and the prevalence of militarism among cultural ministers like Koizumi during wartime. The university had dismissed Ryuuren for promoting liberalism, which faced unanimous opposition from all levels within the institution at that time. Additionally, the story draws inspiration from the Jules Durand espionage case to portray protagonist Yukiko's experiences throughout the war, critiquing both the conflict itself and the prevailing fascism. Later in the film, it depicts Yukiko’s hardships as she decides to be independent, initially experiencing love with Nezora but soon facing imprisonment when he engages in anti-war activities secretly. She endures severe interrogations by spies while being handled by her former classmate Sekikawa. After liberation, Yukiko returns to Nezora's hometown, settling there along with his parents following Japan's defeat where democracy is thriving. Yoshiba resumes teaching at school, whereas Yukiko opts for rural cultural activism. Unlike traditional Japanese women before her, this Yukiko emerges post-war turmoil having discovered herself, adhering firmly to her convictions.。
